Regardless of the year your were born, the Nike Air Max has been (or still is) a staple footwear for many for the last three decades. From London’s smoke laden rave halls, village skate parks or Liverpool’s concrete city streets, the humble Air Max 1 has been described as “a style tribe equaliser” – a favourite for diehard athletes, a longed purchase for a first-time paycheque or a newbie to the sneaker scene.
Celebrating the day of its original release in 1987, Nike’s annual Air Max Day falls on March 26, since becoming a globally anticipated celebration of the now iconic sneaker. One Liverpool store getting involved in the celebrations of such a renowned and forever-evolving shoe by hosting an event is SEVENSTORE, a creative retail space that combines fashion, music, art and culture.
Taking place at the SEVENSTORE retail space in Liverpool’s Baltic Triangle on March 26, guests can expect so much more than sneakers as this Air Max Day event also aims to recognise the communities that have propelled the trainer to a vanguard of cultural iconography, even three decades after its inception. From 7pm to 11pm, visitors can witness poetry readings, live panel talks, immersive and interactive mural painting, art displays, fashion exhibitions and DJ sets at this Air Max takeover.
Nike Air Max Day 2022 will be centred around social change and fuelled by community, with the initiative aiming to unite people and creativity. In honour of Air Max Day, SEVENSTORE has enlisted DJs, designers, theatre producers, artists, writers, and activists as “integral cogs in the machine of a wider conversation”.
From dissecting the scope of gender identity and sustainability, to uplifting the work of artists of colour and promoting wellness classes, Girl Gang Manchester, Aurelia Magazine, Sumuyya Khader, Bhavna Malkani and Jacqui McAssey embody all that the Air Max series is – brimming with unabashed personality, driven by implementing change and championing people. This project is dedicated to the women who designed the sneaker, to the subjects involved, and the communities of supporters, artists, and creatives they wish to inspire.
