As any Scouser knows, our local weather is famously fickle. One minute, the sun is beaming down, and the next, it’s pulled a disappearing act behind a thick Mersey mist. Since sunshine is such a precious commodity around here, we need to make every second count. Thankfully, for us dedicated sun-seeking Liverpudlians, a revolutionary new map has arrived to end the frantic hunt for a bright terrace. Say hello to SunSeekr.
SunSeekr is the ultimate “smart” app designed to track the city’s sunlight with pinpoint accuracy. Developed by architect Mo Dawod, the map takes the guesswork out of your social calendar. By calculating the sun’s trajectory alongside the specific heights of Liverpool’s skyline, the map can tell you exactly which beer gardens are basking in the glow and which are stuck in the shadows at any given moment. Truly, we are living in the future.
How it Works
First gaining traction on Reddit, the app uses a high-tech cocktail of shadow simulation, MapBox navigation, and OpenStreetMap data.
While it initially launched to help coffee lovers find sunny cafes, it didn’t take long for the creator to realise that, this being Liverpool, the people really wanted to know where to find a sunny pint.
Because the map is fully interactive, you can check the current status of the city’s many pubs or even toggle to a specific time later in the afternoon. It’s the perfect way to ensure your chosen spot is perfectly positioned for a golden-hour drink.
