Just when you thought the stockpilers from the last lockdown had enough pasta to last a lifetime, they’re at it again.
As daily Coronavirus cases continue to surge across the nation and speculation of a second lockdown lingers, popular supermarket chains have been forced to re-implement shopping restrictions in their stores in a bid to prevent another stockpiling crisis. The news comes as shoppers have been taking to social media to warn others of bare shelves, with pasta and toilet roll completely selling out in some areas. And if there was one thing from the first lockdown none of us wanted to re-live, it was this one. I mean, honestly, we’d take constant re-runs of Tiger King over this any day of the week.

Tesco, Morrisons and Aldi have all re-implemented shopping restrictions on popular non-perishable items, taking control of the trend before it cleans out stores again – which made it incredibly difficult for them to replenish stock earlier this year.
Customers in Morrisons will be limited to just three of certain items, with a spokesperson confirming to ITV: “Our stock levels of these products are good but we want to ensure that they are available for everyone,”
Similarly, Tesco has limited customers to just one packet of toilet roll per visit, with CEO Dave Lewis saying that people stockpiling popular items “creates a tension in the supply chain” and is “unnecessary”.
Other supermarkets such as Lidl have also discouraged the behaviour, saying in a statement to customers: “Our stores are being replenished every day. That item you want to buy ‘just in case’, might be essential for someone more vulnerable who can’t visit the store multiple times.”
During the initial UK lockdown, which began back in March, shoppers across the country were faced with bare shelves in not only supermarkets, but local corner shops too – with items such as flour, toilet roll, pasta, rice and other non-perishable goods completely sold out as a result of panic buying. For those who prefer a cheeky beer, however, the Corona was (ironically) safe.
