It will come as no surprise to most that Liverpool has a huge Irish population, with its rich culture apparent within the community. As the Liverpool Irish Festival is kicking off, the city is filled with activities, art exhibitions, events and the usual Irish Famine Trail. Well, now it’s official – Liverpool has been named the second most Irish city in the world.
Liverpool has been recognised as a true “home away from home” for Irish expats, ranking second in the world, according to HelloFresh Ireland. The research explored various data points to help determine its results of peak Irishness: it looked at the number of Irish pubs per capita, the percentage of restaurants offering Irish cuisine and the percentage of the population belonging to Irish descent.
Liverpool Irish Festival was a huge part of the results, as well as being a major spot for Irish immigrants for a long time. With 10 Irish pubs per capita, Liverpool sure knows how to have a good time. What is more, a huge number of pubs and restaurants offer Irish cuisine, such as Irish stew, soda bread, and colcannon.
However, Boston was named as the most Irish city in the world, being the most popular destination for Irish immigrants dating back to the colonial period. Boasting seven Irish pubs per capita (still not as many as Liverpool), the city is home to a total of 49.
New York came third on the list, while Glasgow is the fourth most Irish city in the world. Ottawa, Canada is fifth in line, with Vancouver taking sixth place.
