We could soon get a Scottish Mr Darcy with the face of Scottish actor Jack Lowden, starring in the new adaptation of the classic story of Jane Austen’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’. According to Variety, the ‘Slow Horses’ star is “currently in talks” to be a part of the new series.
Did the new ‘Pride and Prejudice’ series find its Scottish Mr Darcy in Jack Lowden? It looks like it has now been officially confirmed! What is more, Golden Globe winner Emma Corrin has been confirmed to play Elizabeth Bennet. Olivia Colman has also been cast in the six-part series.
Based on Jane Austen’s 1813 novel, the love story follows Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet navigating their turbulent relationship.
Jack Lowden is most known for his role in ‘Slow Horses’, and has received Emmy, Golden Globe and BAFTA TV nominations. The actor has also starred in period drama ‘War and Peace’, as well as featured in ‘Dunkirk,’ “Mary Queen of Scots’ and ‘Benediction’.
If Jack Lowden gets cast in ‘Pride and Prejudice’, he will join a noteworthy legacy of stars like Matthew Macfadyen, Colin Firth, Peter Cushing and Laurence Olivier, who have all brought the legendary role of Mr Darcy to life in the past century.
The adaptation of Austen’s most famous novel was first announced last year by Netflix, with author Dolly Alderton set as the scriptwriter. Alderton’s most renowned works include her 2018 memoir ‘Everything I Know About Love’, which was later adapted for TV by the BBC in 2022, as well as the romantic comedy novel ‘Good Material’.
Plus, Netflix has already done an adaptation of Jane Austen’s work – in 2022, ‘Persuasion’ starring Dakota Johnson received praise from critics throughout.
In the future, there are more Austen adaptations coming out, including ‘The Other Bennet Sister’ series on BBC, that follows Elizabeth’s sister Mary Bennet, and a film adaptation of ‘Pride‘, a retelling of the classic story of ‘Pride and Prejudice’ by Haitian American author Ibi Zoboi with a modern twist.
