“If I were a rich man…” There’s no argument: ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ is one of the greatest musicals of all time. “….Ya ba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dum.” The iconic 1964 musical, which spawned a beloved 1971 film adaptation, is regularly being revived on the West End. But here’s a rare chance to catch it on the Liverpool stage.
After a sold-out season at London’s Barbican Theatre, the production is now embarking on a tour of the UK and Ireland—including a stop at the Liverpool Empire (September 23 – 27). Directed by Jordan Fein, this production of ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ has even garnered 13 Olivier nominations and won three, including best musical revival.
What is ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ about?
In the tiny village of Anatevka, where Tevye, a Jewish milkman, lives his life by their proud traditions. For his five daughters, that means a visit from the matchmaker. As each daughter challenges his beliefs, against the backdrop of a changing world, can Tevye hold on to his roots, or must he bend to the will of his children and learn to embrace the unfamiliar?
But whether you know the story of ‘Fiddler On The Roof’ or not—a Jewish community seeking refuge from the fearsome pogroms of Czarist Russia in 1905—you will certainly know its music. Like the knockout number, ‘If I Were A Rich Man’, or the show’s thrilling opening, ‘Tradition’, as well as ‘Matchmaker’ and ‘Sunrise, Sunset’.
The first UK and Ireland tour of this classic musical in over 12 years will kick off at Bromley Churchill Theatre on July 24 and end at Birmingham Alexandra Theatre on December 6, 2025. In between, it will take to the stage in Leeds, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Dublin, Manchester, Cardiff and many more places.
