Liverpool sure knows how to celebrate, doing so by triggering earth tremors. Following the Liverpool FC winning the historic Premier League title against Tottenham Hotspur. On April 27, Arne Slot and the team won the football club’s 20th championship, defeating Tottenham 5-1 at Anfield Stadium. As a result, the fans celebrated so hard, that earthquake monitors at the University of Liverpool were triggered, as the fans caused Earth tremors.
That’s right, you could say Liverpool was so “quaking” with joy, that they made the Earth tremble. The Earth moved, and so did our hearts… Okay, I’ll stop now.
Scientists at The University of Liverpool reported a peak magnitude of 1.74 on the Richter scale, with the most significant tremor being triggered by Alexis Mac Allister’s strike in the 24th minute. So yes, Liverpool had a minor Earthquake due to people being too happy!
Dr Antoine Septier, Dr Farnaz Kamranzad, and Professor Ben Edwards led the study from the University’s Department of Earth, Ocean, and Environmental Sciences, partnering with Liverpool FC.
60,415 fans at Anfield were enough to cause some actual seismic activity, with the second-biggest tremor was caused by Mo Salah’s goal, reaching 1.60 on the scale. What is more, Cody Gakpo’s moment raked in a 1.03 tremor, and the goal from Destiny Udogie was 1.35.
Professor Ben Edwards told the BBC: “Much like natural seismic events, these goals produced bursts of ground-shaking, triggered by the sheer passion of Liverpool fans. Their enthusiasm was literally powerful enough to move the Earth.”
Dr Farnaz Kamranzad said: “Every cheer, every celebration, leaves a trace beneath our feet, a seismic fingerprint of collective joy, written into the Earth’s memory long after the final whistle.”
Dr Antoine Septier said: “I hope that showing this data will spark innovative ideas for potential applications, perhaps even to enhance the stadium experience.”
Las time something like this happened was during the Taylor Swift Eras Tour in Edinburgh, were people danced so hard they also triggered the local earthquake monitors.
Next up, the Liverpool FC Victory parade!
